Newport News man, teen arrested after assault at Patrick Henry Mall

A 19-year-old Newport News man and a teen were arrested after police said they assaulted someone at Patrick Henry Mall Friday, and one of them displayed a handgun. Devin Terrell Champan, of the 800 block of Chapin Wood Drive, as well as a 17-year-old Newport News boy, were charged with assault by mob and having a concealed weapon, said police department spokesman Lou Thurston. The teen was also charged with underage possession of a firearm, Thurston said. Police responded to the mall about 11:45 a.m. There, a witness told them one of the suspects pulled up his shirt and briefly displayed a handgun before running from the area, according to Thurston.
