The embryos were left over from a previous in vitro fertilization treatment. The octuplets were born two months early, weighing 1 pound, 8 ounces to 3 pounds, 4 ounces each.

She is the single mother of six other children, also conceived using IVF. Suleman lives in California with her mother in a three-bedroom house that is in pre-foreclosure as of February 2009. Suleman has no job and relies on government assistance.
