Kay Emfinger and her new wife, Shannon, sliced into a thick chocolate cake outside Jefferson County Courthouse in Birmingham on Feb. 9, and admired their small table spread: a rose bouquet, glass flutes, freshly popped champagne. A scattering of friends, family, even homeless people from a nearby park whooped and whistled on the day gay marriage became legal in Alabama.
