07/30/2014 LB Jonathon Sharpe was signed by the Colts Tuesday (July 29). Sharpe participated in the 2014 Super Regional Combine in Detroit. At North Greenville University, he started for two seasons and had 132 tackles, including 23 1/2 for loss, and three interceptions.

----------------------------------------------- RB Phillip Tanner was signed by the Colts Tuesday (July 29). Tanner was with the Cowboys from 2011 to 2013 and rushed for 149 yards and two touchdowns on 56 carries and added nine receptions for 93 yards. On special teams, he contributed 21 tackles. He became a free agent in March when the Cowboys elected not to tender him as a restricted free agent.

----------------------------------------------- WR Josh Gordon and his attorney will argue in an appeal to the NFL on Friday that second-hand smoke resulted in a failed drug test.

Gordon is working with Maurice Suh, the lawyer who assisted Seattle Seahawks cornerback Richard Sherman in his case against the NFL in 2012. Sherman's four-game suspension was waived.

Gordon is facing a one-year suspension for violating the NFL's substance abuse policy for a third time. If the suspension is upheld, he will not be able to apply for reinstatement until one year has passed.

According to ESPN.com, Gordon was just over the threshold with his failed test with one of his samples. A second sample was more than a nonogram per milliliter below the cutoff line. His legal team plans to call witnesses to testify that the scores are an indication of second-hand smoke.

ProFootballTalk.com reported that Gordon has passed 70 or more drug tests since last year when he entered Stage II of the NFL's drug program.

Gordon missed the first two games of the 2013 season after a positive test for a banned substance, which he said was codeine from cough syrup.

Gordon's July 5 arrest in North Carolina for DWI will have no impact on his appeal Friday, according to ESPN.com.

RB Steven Jackson sat out Tuesday's practice with a right hamstring injury, but head coach Mike Smith expects Jackson to be ready in time for the regular-season opener against the New Orleans Saints on Sept. 7.

Smith noted it was not the hamstring that Jackson injured in Week 2 last season, when the veteran struggled out of the gate and had his streak of eight consecutive 1,000-yard rushing seasons snapped, finishing with 543 yards and six touchdowns on 157 carries. However, it continues a series of soft-tissue issues the 31 year old Jackson has dealt with in recent seasons.

With Jackson sidelined, veteran Jacquizz Rodgers and rookie Devonta Freeman will shoulder the bulk of the workload, with Antone Smith also likely to see increased snaps.

----------------------------------------------- LB Paul Worrilow is being groomed to be the defensive signal-caller with Sean Weatherspoon out for the season with a ruptured Achilles tendon. An undrafted rookie in 2013, Worrilow led the Falcons with 137 tackles last season.

----------------------------------------------- LB Walker May worked with trainers on the side Tuesday with an undisclosed injury.

----------------------------------------------- WR Kelvin Benjamin is resting his bruised knee, and the rookie rode the exercise bike and worked through some rehab drills. He had a sleeve over his leg, but he did not walk with a limp. The first-rounder hopes to return in time to play in the preseason opener.

----------------------------------------------- QB Seth Lobato was signed by the Dolphins Tuesday (July 29). The 6-6, 223-pound Lobato joins the Dolphins after spending time during the 2014 offseason with the Indianapolis Colts after being signed as an undrafted college free agent following the 2014 NFL draft. A three-year starter, he appeared in 35 career games at Northern Colorado where he completed 637 of 1,126 passes for 8,090 yards and 53 touchdowns while gaining Big Sky All-Conference honorable mention recognition.

----------------------------------------------- DE D'Aundre Reed was signed by the Dolphins Tuesday (July 29). The 6-4, 260-pound Reed joins the Dolphins after spending time during the 2014 off-season with the Jacksonville Jaguars. Reed has appeared in six regular season games. Reed began 2013 with the Minnesota Vikings after his release following training camp. He spent a portion of 2013 season on the San Francisco 49ers practice squad prior to joining the Jaguars as a member of their practice squad on December 17, 2013. Reed appeared in six games with Minnesota in 2012 after being inactive for all 16 games as a rookie in 2011. He originally entered the NFL in 2011 as a seventh round selection (215th overall) of the Vikings.

----------------------------------------------- CB Josh Thomas returned from a back injury that kept him out the first four practices.
