NFL Team Report - Cleveland Browns - INSIDE SLANT
QB Campbell cleared to start vs. Patriots
Campbell will start Sunday against the New England Patriots. Campbell and twice-benched quarterback Brandon Weeden have both been recovering from concussions, which led the Browns to sign Caleb Hanie and Alex Tanney and have them split first-team reps in midweek practice.
Fortunately for the Browns, Campbell was back on the field Friday.
"He's had a good two days of practice, been very sharp," Browns coach Rob Chudzinski said. "You go with the doctors. I feel confident in them, and that's the first thing. As I mentioned, it was important that he's been here.
"On Wednesday, he was able to walk through and do the things. He's been in the meetings, and then to go out on the practice field and be as sharp as he's been is important. I have all of the confidence in the world in Jason."
Whether Weeden will be able to serve as the backup or the Browns will need to turn to Hanie or Tanney behind Campbell on Sunday had yet to be determined. There is a possibility Cleveland could have three active quarterbacks on game day.
Campbell gives the Browns some consistency at least, although he began the season as Weeden's backup and was passed over by Brian Hoyer and then Weeden again before being given a shot at the starting job.
"We've had multiple (quarterbacks), but again, the situation was what it was," said Chudzinski. "We're getting ready to play; press on; whatever happens during the course of the game, we have to be ready for. That's part of this league and dealing with injuries."
The Browns still don't know on what play Weeden suffered his concussion, but Chudzinski isn't pinning the blame for the concussions on his offensive line.
"You have to look at when those happen and when the injuries are happening, whether they're on scrambles, whether they're on breakdowns from whoever the quarterback or from the offensive line is," he said. "It's not always just the protection or one person that you can point to in that regard."
Tanney was signed off the Cowboys practice squad last week. Hanie played in 10 games while making four starts with the Chicago Bears during a four-year span from 2008-2011, completing 59 of 116 passes for 679 yards with three touchdowns and 10 interceptions.
Hanie was the third quarterback on the Broncos roster in 2012. He was with the Ravens in training camp this year.
SERIES HISTORY: 22nd regular season meeting. Browns lead series, 12-9. The Browns lead the overall series dating back to 1971, but nine of the Browns 12 victories were earned before 1992. The Patriots have a 5-2 edge since 1999.
NFL Team Report - Cleveland Browns - NOTES, QUOTES
--Patriots head coach Bill Belichick's first head coaching job was with the Browns in 1991, as just about everyone knows. His first victory with the Browns was earned on the road in Foxboro in a 20-0 shutout of the Patriots in front of a tiny crowd of 35,377.
As the Browns players left the field for the locker room after the game, Belichick ran to the opposite end of the field to exchange high-fives with Browns fans that made the trip to Foxboro.
