MLB Team Report - Kansas City Royals - INSIDE PITCH

Wanting to find room for former first-round pick Christian Colon, the Royals traded backup third baseman Danny Valencia to the Toronto Blue Jays in exchange for catcher Erik Kratz and right-hander Liam Hendriks.

The trade paved the way for Colon to be promoted from Triple-A Omaha to back up second baseman Omar Infante, shortstop Alcides Escobar and third baseman Mike Moustakas.

"We just need to add some depth there to be able to spell Infante and Escobar from time to time," Royals general manager Dayton Moore told the Kansas City Star. "We felt it was a move that strengthened the depth of our roster."

Colon, 25, went 4-for-12 for Kansas City earlier this season. He is hitting .307 with a .361 on-base percentage, a .430 slugging percentage, eight home runs and 47 RBIs through 85 games with Omaha.

Kratz will join the Royals in place of backup catcher Brett Hayes, whom the team designated for assignment. Kratz, 34, batted .198 with three homers in 34 games for Toronto this year. He will back up Salvador Perez.

"We added some depth in the backup catching role with Kratz," Moore said to the Kansas City Star. "He's a quality receiver, and can throw, and has got some power."

Hendriks, 25, is ticketed for Omaha. He went 1-0 with a 6.08 ERA in three starts for the Blue Jays this year, 8-1 with a 2.33 ERA in 18 games (16 starts) for Triple-A Buffalo.
