Jillian Michaels is not just "TV's Toughest Trainer," she's also a Self Magazine contributor, DVD maven, has her own line of supplements and is a best-selling author. As someone who always wants to blame my metabolism for everything ("I gained five pounds in one week!" "I'm tired!" "The car won't start!") her book, Master Your Metabolism, sounded right up my alley. I was ready for some of the tough love I know she knows how to dole out.

The book starts with Jillian's own struggles to get her emotional eating under control. It then quickly turns to laying out the groundwork for how the book will help lead you on the right path to metabolic glory - from removing the toxins in your body to removing them from your environment. You'll be amazed at how easy it is for harmful chemicals, hormones and antibiotics (yes, antibiotics!) to get into your system through the foods you eat and the containers you've used to make that food more portable.

Overall, it's a great read and Jillian is always inspiring. The only issue I had was trying to understand some of the more technical aspects. It's hard to concentrate on the names of certain chemicals my brain had no intention of remembering. I tried, I really did, but when it came to understanding the science of something as intricate as our digestive and metabolic systems I tuned out and there wasn't a lot of retention. Luckily, Michaels does a great job of using both scientific and layman's terms - it just makes the book take that much longer to get through.

If you are someone who prefers to skip to the end and just follow the "mandatory" guidelines, it shouldn't be too hard to do. If you enjoy the research that goes into making these decisions, you'll enjoy the book even more.
