The Outer Critics Circle gave a thumbs-up to Tony nomination packleader "A Gentleman's Guide to Love and Murder," handing the musical four kudos including top tuner in the race for the org's 2013-14 awards.
The Rialto musical adaptation of "Bullets Over Broadway" and the Main Stem revival of "The Glass Menagerie" notched three awards apiece. "All the Way" scored the laurel for best play, with lead thesp Bryan Cranston taking the trophy for lead actor in a play. (All three titles are Tony contenders.)
"Fun Home," the Off Broadway awards-season favorite that is gearing up for a Broadway transfer next season, snagged the award for Off Broadway musical, while the gong for Off Broadway play went to "The Explorer's Club."
Among other noteworthy OCC results, "Gentleman's Guide" star Jefferson Mays beat out his Tony competition Neil Patrick Harris ("Hedwig and the Angry Inch") for the lead actor in a musical award. Jason Robert Brown ("The Bridges of Madison County") took home the kudo for score.
However, don't look to the OCC for any tea leaves about the ultracompetitive Tony race for lead actress in a musical -- the OCC award went to Audra McDonald, who isn't a Tony contender in that category because the show she toplines, "Lady Day at Emerson's Bar & Grill," is classified as a play by the Tonys.
A special OCC award went to Bill Berloni, the longtime animal trainer whose pups appeared this season in shows including "Bullets Over Broadway," "Lady Day," "The Open House" and "The Threepenny Opera."
The annual OCC awards are voted on by the Outer Critics membership, which consists of journos who cover New York theater for media outlets based outside of Gotham.
The 2014 Outer Critics award ceremony is set for May 22 at Sardi's. Billy Porter, who won a Tony last season for his perf in "Kinky Boots," will be a presenter along with fellow thesps Victoria Clark, Terrence Mann, Andrea Martin and Shuler Hensley.
