The Visual Effects Society has announced this year's nominees for the 12th annual VES awards.

As previously announced, the Visionary Award will be presented to Alfonso Cuarón for "Gravity," which led all films with eight vfx nominations. "Pacific Rim" received six, while "The Hobbit: The Desolation of Smaug" and Iron Man 3" received five each.

Those pics were nominated in the "Outstanding Visual Effects in a Visual Effects-Driven Feature" category. In a surprise, "The Lone Ranger" was nominated in feature supporting vfx. Disney's disastrous Western was quite f/x-driven, though many of its effects were in-camera practical f/x, which aren't a major focus for the VES. Other supporting effects nominees include "Rush," "The Great Gatsby," The Secret Life of Walter Mitty," "The Wolf of Wall Street" and "White House Down."

Nobable omissions from the top category include "Man of Steel" (which got 2 nominations), "The Wolverine," "Thor: The Dark World" and "World War Z"

"Frozen" and "The Croods" tied for the most noms among animated features, with four each. Among TV programs, "Game of Thrones" snared the most nominations with four.

"Call of Duty" got three nominations, one for real-time visuals in a videogame, and the other two for its "Epic Night Out" commercial.

Effects pioneer John Dykstra will receive the org's Lifetime Achievement Award.

The VES Awards will be presented Feb. 12 at the Beverly Hilton.
