VH1 has announced "The Tanning of America: One Nation Under Hip Hop," a 4-part documentary series that will examine the history of hip hop as a cultural movement.
Project falls under the cable net's Rock Doc franchise, and will debut in February.
Billy Corben and Alfred Spellman ("Cocaine Cowboys") and examines hip hop's influence in music, film, TV, fashion, business, race relations and politics. Never-before-seen footage and interviews featuring Diddy, Dr Dre, Mariah Carey, Russell Simmons, Nas, Reverend Run, Fab 5 Freddy, Al Sharpton, Cory Booker and more are included in the docuseries.
Announcement of "Tanning in America" arrives as VH1 continues to dive into urban fare on its primetime lineup. Unscripted programs currently airing on VH1 include "Black Ink Crew," "Love & Hip Hop," "Chrissy & Mr. Jones" and "Basketball Wives."
"Tanning of America" is produced by Rakontur. Stoute serves as exec producer alongside VH1′s Susan Levinson, Ben Zurier, Shelly Tatro, Brad Abramson and Stephen Mintz.
