Darren Aronofsky is in early talks to direct an adaptation of "Red Sparrow," based on the Jason Matthews spy novel, for Fox.

Studio acquired the movie rights in April and set up the project with Steve Zaillian and Garrett Basch producing.

The book, published in June by Scribner, is set in modern-day Russia and follows a CIA officer and a Russian ballerina turned spy who has become a "sparrow," or trained seductress.

Aronofsky shot "Noah" last summer for Paramount Pictures and New Regency, which have dated the biblical epic for March 28, 2014. Russell Crowe is starring.

"Noah" is a retelling of the Noah's Ark tale and the helmer's followup to "Black Swan." Aronofsky and Scott Franklin are producing.

Aronofsky is repped by CAA.

The negotiations for "Sparrow" were first reported by Deadline.com.
