Boasting six nominations apiece, resurgent pop titan Justin Timberlake and collegiate hip-hop duo Macklemore and Ryan Lewis dominated the MTV Video Music Awards nominations, which were announced Wednesday morning.

Competing for the top video of the year honor are Timberlake's "Mirrors," Macklemore and Lewis' "Thrift Shop," Robin Thicke's "Blurred Lines," Bruno Mars' "Locked Out of Heaven" and Taylor Swift's "I Knew You Were Trouble." Mars trails the two frontrunners with four nominations, while Thicke, Miley Cyrus, Pink and 30 Seconds to Mars all earned three noms each.

Set to be broadcast live from Brooklyn's Barclays Center on August 25, the 2013 VMAs will mark the kudocast's 30th anniversary. The VMAs have experienced some seesawing ratings in recent years: 2011's edition was the highest-rated broadcast in MTV history, while last year's - which was atypically held on a Thursday, on the same night that President Obama addressed the DNC - was the lowest-rated VMAs since 2007.
