The tropical wave in the Yucatan Channel near Mexico is on the verge of strengthening into a tropical depression or storm.

As of 2 p.m. on Wednesday, the National Hurricane Center gave it a near 100 percent chance of developing, as satellite imagery indicates a bona fide tropical system may already be forming.

If a hurricane hunter aircraft confirms that, the hurricane center will start issuing advisories later on Wednesday, senior hurricane specialist Jack Beven said.

The next named storm will be Don.

The system is of no concern to Florida, as models point it generally toward Texas or Louisiana. The question now is how strong it will get before reaching the Gulf Coast.

Interestingly, the system was virtually dead two days ago, given a near zero chance of developing. It sure made a comeback.
