Broward County Animal Care and Adoption

Ongoing. Dog and cat lovers are needed to serve as animal care volunteers for the county’s two adoption centers. Teens 14 and older may volunteer as special event assistants at adoption events, while teens 16 and older may volunteer as greeters at the Fort Lauderdale Adoption Center, 1870 SW 39th St., Fort Lauderdale or Pompano Beach Adoption Center, 3100 NW 19th Terrace. Farm Assistance

Through Feb. 28. Animal lovers are needed to help with feeding and grooming the dogs, horses, ponies, goats, etc. and cleaning stalls at Horse and Petting Pal Interaction, Inc. (HAPPI) Farm, which offers free therapeutic riding lessons and walk-through visits for veterans and people with special needs. New Volunteer Orientation

Jan. 16 and Feb. 2, 20. Join this one-hour session to learn about volunteering for HandsOn Broward projects. At least two non-perishable food items are required as admission, and teens must be accompanied by a parent or guardian. Wed., 7-8 p.m.; Sat., 11 a.m-noon at HandsOn Broward, 6600 W. Sorting Saturdays

Jan. 19 and Feb. 2, 16. Volunteers will unload, sort and re-package grocery items to be distributed to agencies throughout South Florida. A HandsOn Broward New Volunteer Orientation is required, and teens must be accompanied by an adult. 8:30-11:30 a.m. at Feeding South Florida Headquarters and Broward Distribution Center, 2501 SW 32nd Terrace, Pembroke Park. 2013 MLK Day Parade and Peace Rally


Jan. 21. Participate in a community parade and rally for non-violence in honor of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr. The march will travel from Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Elementary School to Dillard High School, where the Peace Rally will be held. Unity in the Community Family Fun Day


Feb. 2. Volunteer to help with set up, face painting, stage assistance, the food and beverage stations, registration, the children's area or clean up/break down at this second annual event that features entertainment for children, musical and cultural groups and more to bring together Pompano Beach residents. Food and drink will be provided. A HandsOn Broward New Volunteer Orientation is required, and teens 15 and younger must be accompanied by an adult. 9 a.m.-4 p.m. at Pompano Community Park, 2001 NE 10th St., Pompano Beach.
