1. Used tires can save a lot

A few months ago we had a tire blowout on the highway.
A few months ago we had a tire blowout on the highway. We were rounding a turn and there was a two-by-four in the middle of the lane. We didn't have time to switch lanes, so we did our best to straddle it. We missed it with the front tires, but rolled...

3. Two new tires on front or rear: The debate continues

The Road Warrior w/Dan Hartzell
In the Jan. 25 column, I concluded that tire experts must be correct in recommending that, if you install two new tires on a front-wheel-drive car while allowing two older tires to remain on the vehicle, the new rubber should go on the rear wheels, the...

5. Surprise: Two new tires should go on rear

Q: I made an appointment at a 'chain' tire store for two new front tires for my front-wheel-drive minivan. Not till I arrived was I told the new tires had to go on the rear if there was significant difference between the amount of tread on the new tires compared to the old. I said I was replacing the front tires only because I'd experienced poor traction in several inches of snow, so putting the new tires on the rear would provide no benefit. We inspected the tires and the salesman concluded there was a significant difference, and said company policy dictated the new tires had to go on the rear. (By my estimate, the existing tires had about 25 percent tread remaining, and would have passed state inspection.) A different tire store granted my request, but only after I signed a form indicating I was taking this action against their recommendation. Other sources support the rear-wheels claim, but I disagree.
