Dean Leger, 67, of New Ulm, died Monday, March 11, 2013 at the Fairfax Community Home in Fairfax, MN.
Visitation will be from 12:00 – 2:00 p.m. on Friday, March 15, 2013 at the Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapel in Spearfish. Funeral service will follow at 2:00 p.m. at the chapel with Rev. Stephan Sandness officiating. Burial will take place at a later date at the New Ulm City Cemetery.
Dean Thomas Leger, the son of Thomas and Mary Margaret (Maney) Leger was born April 17, 1945 in Buffalo, SD. After graduating from Buffalo High School in 1963, Dean entered the U.S. Navy and received electricians training. He served two tours of duty in Vietnam and received the Vietnam Campaign Medal, the National Defense Service Medal, the Vietnam Service Medal and the Good Conduct Medal. After his honorable discharge in 1967, Dean was employed by Black and Decker in San Diego, CA. He worked for RCA in Greenland maintaining radar screens, for Burns and Roe Construction in the Marshall Islands, and later for Metals Engineering in Minneapolis. Dean was united in marriage to Linda Gerber April 6, 1973 in Brookings, SD. The couple made their home in New Ulm where Dean worked for Kraft Foods as an electrician until retiring due to his health. By example, he showed integrity, strength of character and perseverance. Dean loved golf and was a member of the Mayflower Country Club in Fairfax for many years. He would play as early as possible in the spring until the course closed in late fall. Dean bowled on two men’s leagues for many years and was an avid Minnesota Vikings and NASCAR racing fan. He had firm political beliefs and enjoyed a good political debate. Dean was a charter member of Christ the King Lutheran Church in New Ulm.
Survivors include his wife Linda Leger of New Ulm; sons John Leger of New Ulm, David Leger (Shilo Knaevelsrud) of Los Angeles, CA; mother Margaret Leger of Upton, WY; sisters Ila Leger (Lennie Skillingstad) of Sundance, WY, Twyla Burr of Upton, WY, Wendy Kipp of Sundance, WY, Mary Cowing of Mankato, MN, Patty Deromedi (Gordon) of Worland, WY, Jackie Meier (Eugene) of Fort Collins, CO; brothers Ed Leger (Connie Wasson) of Vancouver, WA, Richard Leger of Mossyrock, WA; sister-in-law Pat Mollenbrink of Sundance, WY; brothers-in-law Delbert Stugelmeyer of Roseburg, OR, Al Strobel of Mayer, AZ; aunts, uncles, many nieces, nephews, cousins, other relatives; Jack and Lynne Riley of Sundance, WY; and special friends Mike and Nancy Stark of New Ulm.
In addition to his father, Dean was preceded in death by his sisters Neva Stugelmeyer and Bonnie Strobel; brother Jim Leger; brothers-in-law Stan Cowing, Ed Burr and Rick Kipp.
Memorials are preferred to the Forever Home Animal Sanctuary in New Ulm, the Brown County Humane Society, the New Ulm Area Food Shelf or to the donor’s choice.
Local arrangements are under the care of Fidler-Isburg Funeral Chapels and Crematory Service of Spearfish.
