ASHFORD - The Friends of Babcock Library will be holding their fifteenth annual wine, beer, and spirit tasting on Saturday, Sept. 13, 3-5 p.m. at Eastern Connecticut State University's Church Farm Center for Arts and Sciences, 396 Mansfield Road (Route 89), Ashford. The proceeds from this annual event benefit the Babcock Library in Ashford.

A selection of red and white wines, spirits, and craft beer will be made available by the Ashford Spirit Shoppe and Westford Hill Distillers for sampling. As in previous years, besides the tasting, there will be light refreshments, musical entertainment by the Liswell's Band, an art show and sale featuring local artists of mixed media and photographers, and a silent auction of goods and services.

Joining the festivities this year will be Bruce Weinstein and Mark Scarbrough authors of over twenty cookbooks. Their single subject cookbooks include such varied subjects as: ice cream, shrimp, brownies, potatoes, pizza, goat, and peanut butter. They spent many months finding and debunking cooking myths for their book "Lobsters Scream when You Boil Them and 100 Other Myths About Food and Cooking." They have a monthly column on weightwatchers.com and have written for many food related publications. Their newest book, "Vegetarian Dinner Parties: 150 Meatless Meals Good Enough to Serve to Company," will be released on Sept. 8 and they will be signing copies the day of the event.

Willington student named to KO honor roll

WILLINGTON - Nye Deskus of Willington was named to the Kingswood Oxford School honor roll for the 2014 spring semester. Kingswood Oxford is a private day school located in West Hartford. To make the honor roll, a student must have a B+ average with no grade lower than a C.

Moonlight Paddle on Staffordville Lake

STAFFORD - The Stafford Lions Club will hold it's fifth annual Moonlight Paddle on Staffordville Lake on Friday, Aug. 22. The event starts at 6:30 p.m. with launch at 7:30 p.m. This event is free, bring your own kayak or canoe with PFD for all paddlers. Free hot-dogs and snacks. Rain date is Saturday, Aug. 23.

The event includes a raffle for a complete kayak package which includes kayak, paddle and PFD. Raffle tickets will be available for sale at the event.

Requests for school bus transportation to daycare due

In accordance with Stafford Board of Education policy, Patricia A. Collin, Ed.D., superintendent of schools, announced that all requests for transportation to a daycare provider, in your child's school bussing zone, must be renewed each year in writing and be sent to your child's school for approval by the principal. These requests must be received by Aug. 19. Any bus changes received between Aug. 20 and Aug. 29, will be held and will not take effect until Sept. 3. Bus changes during the rest of the year must be made 48 hours in advance except in the case of an emergency.

Flo's Friendship Kitchen seeking volunteers

STAFFORD SPRINGS - Flo's Friendship Kitchen is currently searching for volunteers for the following activities:

Bread delivery on Wednesdays: This volunteer would go to the First United Methodist Church, 8 Church St., on Wednesday any time after 8:30 a.m., pick up the bread containers on the shelves in the kitchen, and drive to Stafford Big Y, 87 W. Stafford Road, Stafford Springs, around the far side of the store to the delivery area. There will be a shopping cart(s) containing the bread. Fill the containers and bring them back to the church and leave them on the tables in fellowship hall. This entire activity would take approximately 30 minutes.

Meal deliveries on Wednesday or Fridays: This volunteer would go to First United Methodist Church, pick up the meals and deliver according to the list of people needing a meal on any given day. Pick up time on Wednesdays is 11:45 a.m. Pick up time on Fridays is 5:15 p.m. Training (learning the routes) is included.

STAFFORD - The Stafford Historical Society is requesting donations of tag sale items for the annual fundraising tag sale to be held on Oct. 4.
