The first day of school in East Hartford is Aug. 27 this year, but Cynthia Ritchie, the new assistant superintendent of elementary curriculum, instruction and assessment, reports for her first day on Aug. 18.

Ritchie was added to the East Hartford administration after four rounds of interviews were conducted from a pool of more than 30 applications, as the town searched to fill the vacancy created by the retiring previous assistant superintendent, Debbie Kaprove.

According to a July 30 press release from East Hartford Superintendent of Schools Nathan Quesnel, Ritchie's role will be overseeing East Hartford's 10 district elementary schools, assisting principals, teachers, students and parents in East Hartford's continued journey to student achievement. Quesnel said, "She will work closely with my Central Office team, Board of Education and community members. I greatly look forward to her leadership in this role and anticipate great things!"

Quesnel stated in the press release, "I was especially impressed at her interviews by both her competence and love for the work we do. She is hard-working, collaborative and humble. She brings leadership, and the technical skills to assist us in taking those necessary next steps towards growth and improvement."

Her LinkedIn profile states that Ritchie was previously the director of student achievement, academic programs and professional development for the Salem Public School District, a position she held for one year. Prior to that, Ritchie served as the principal at Salem School for four years, as a remedial reading and language arts consultant in Old Saybrook Public Schools, and an adjunct professor at the University of New Haven. Ritchie began her career teaching kindergarten and fifth grade in Enfield

Quesnel said, "Mrs. Ritchie brings a wealth of knowledge and background in regard to early literacy and the development of curriculum, instruction and assessment. She brings a committed and deep passion for all students to the district. We are thrilled to add Mrs. Ritchie to the East Hartford Public Schools family and greatly look forward to the impact she will have on our district."
