  1. Argentine archbishop picked as pope

    Associated Press
From "the end of the earth," the Catholic Church found a surprising new leader Wednesday, a pioneer pope from Argentina who took the name Francis, a pastor rather than a manager to resurrect a church and faith in crisis. He is the first pontiff from the...

  7. The Pope Benedict I know

Years ago, I accompanied James Cardinal Hickey, then the archbishop of Washington, to St. Charles Borromeo Seminary in Philadelphia, where then-Cardinal Joseph Ratzinger was to give a lecture. After his lecture and after fielding questions from his audience, Cardinal Ratzinger boarded a small plane that would take him and five other passengers to Washington, where he would attend a dinner and then give another lecture. Even though he was suffering from a bad cold and the flight was quite turbulent, Cardinal Ratzinger remained calm and serene. He patiently responded to all our questions and comments during the flight and throughout the day.

  9. Can a new pope save the Catholic Church?

    Bill Press
It's been a busy week. The Senate voted 78-22 to renew the Violence Against Women Act. Christopher Dorner, ex-cop turned cop killer, was finally tracked down near Big Bear, Calif. Leaders of the International Olympic Committee voted to drop wrestling from...

  11. The mortal pope and eternal Rome

Growing up in Rome, not far from Saint Peter's Basilica (whose dome I could see from my parents' bedroom) I did not think much of my circumstance. I thought it was just normal to drive my scooter by the Vatican walls and to see the Swiss guards seriously guarding the entrance to Vatican City. I also thought it normal to be able to go into Vatican City (as my father was a Vatican employee) to buy cheaper gas and imported goods free of the high Italian taxes. It is only after moving to America that I realized the exceptional luck of my youth.

  13. Pope Benedict XVI's one unforgivable failure

Nothing distinguished the papacy of Pope Benedict XVI so much as the way in which he is leaving. We should be grateful that he realizes his body is failing him — most people in power do not — and is abdicating. But let's not forget that it...

  15. Retiring pope elevated OC bishop

At 85, Pope Benedict XVI is the first to resign the papacy in centuries, citing his age and health concerns. But a relatively young Orange County bishop Benedict appointed just months ago may carry on his influence in the diocese for years to come.

  17. After Benedict XVI

In nearly eight years as pope, Benedict XVI embraced a traditionalist — and to many critics, authoritarian — view of both the papacy and of church teaching. So it's ironic that he will be remembered for his revolutionary decision to relinquish the Chair of St. Peter rather than die in office, the first such abdication in nearly 600 years.

  19. Benedict stumbled trying to right troubled church

Pope Benedict XVI set clear and ambitious goals for his papacy quickly after he was elected: He hoped to re-evangelize the increasingly secular West. He would show that religious faith and reason could co-exist in the modern world. He would reach out to...
