A Chicago man was accused of discharging a loaded firearm in his bed Tuesday, accidentally shooting his girlfriend in the leg, according to county prosecutors.
Shaquille Sankey, 20, of West Englewood, was arrested at home around 1:30 a.m. Wednesday by police officers investigating the shooting, which prosecutors said was apparently an accident.
Prosecutors said the gun was in Sankey's bed while he was with his 21-year-old partner when it went off, wounding her right knee. The woman was taken to a hospital, prosecutors said, and was not pressing charges. Sankey was charged with several unlawful use of a weapon offenses.
Officers investigating Sankey's apartment found two other firearms and ammunition being stored there, the police report said. The report said Sankey admitted to shooting the woman and running out of the house with the gun, eventually hiding it under a log behind a nearby house.
Sankey, a member of the Gangster Disciples street gang, allegedly told police officers that "he got all the guns at the same time for protection, with all the [bleep] happening to his people."
Sankey was brought to the Cook County Criminal Courthouse Thursday afternoon and ordered held in lieu of $250,000 bond. Judge Peggy Chiampas, who set the bond amount, told Sankey, "You're lucky she's alive. Big time."
