  1. Funeral Services Held for LAPD Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner

LOS ANGELES -- Funderal services were held today for Los Angeles Police Department Deputy Chief Kenneth Garner, who died unexpectedly at his home on March 1. Garner was one of the LAPD's highest-ranking black officers and had been with the force for...

  3. Decades Old 911 Call May Hold Clue in Serial Killer Case

LOS ANGELES -- They have a sample of his DNA, a description from a survivor and a $500,000 reward, but detectives investigating the city's most notorious serial killer have hit a wall. On Wednesday, they released a recording of a 1987 emergency call in...

  5. Elect the police chief

I was disappointed to read the March 31 editorial, "<a href="http://www.latimes.com/news/opinion/editorials/la-ed-termlimit31-2009mar31%2C0%2C5997307.story">LAPD&rsquo;s chief and term limits</a>," in which The Times dismisses as "cynical and corrupt" our idea to give the citizens of Los Angeles the power to directly elect their own police chief. In a city that allows its residents to have a direct say in their city attorney and controller, it makes sense to open up the head of the city's largest and most visible agency to the same level of scrutiny.

  8. Mayor Declares 'Crash' Day in Los Angeles

    Zap2It.com
Driving in Los Angeles -- always a dicey proposition -- will get a little bit more melodramatic on Tuesday (April 4) when the City of Angels officially celebrates "Crash"/FilmL.A. Day. Mayor Antonio Villaraigosa, the Los Angeles city council and Police...

  10. Carlos Alvarez: L.A. mayoral candidate

    1) Since Mayor Villaraigosa called for expanding the police department by at least 1,000 officers, 694 have joined the force. Considering that crime continues to be down in Los Angeles, should the hiring go forward even in the face of dramatic budget...

  12. Lindsay Lohan fires back at police 'gay' remark

Lindsay Lohan said Friday that police have no business getting involved in her personal life, a day after the police chief explained that the paparazzi were no longer an issue -- in part because the 22-year-old actress had evidently "gone gay."

  15. Around the Globes

With every New Year, the scent of trophies fills the West Los Angeles air. And so once again, I pick up my tux from the dry cleaners and head back onto the awards trail.
