Democrat Joseph D. Courtney won his seat in Congress by 91 votes in 2006, defeating incumbent Republican Rep. Rob Simmons in the race for Connecticut¿s always contentious 2nd Congressional District. He serves on the Education and Labor Committee; and on the Armed Services committee, where he sits on the Seapower and Expeditionary Forces and the Military Readiness Subcommittees. Before his election, Courtney, representing Vernon, served in the Connecticut General Assembly for four consecutive terms -- from 1987 to 1994. He earned a law degree from the University of Connecticut School of Law in 1978. Courtney and his wife, Audrey, a pediatric nurse practitioner, have two children.
