  1. TV picks: Louis C.K., 'Veep,' Wonder Woman, woolly mammoths

<strong>"Louis C.K.: Oh My God" (premieres Saturday, HBO)</strong>. Funny, deep and unsparing of himself, Louis C.K. is arguably the most important comic going, both for his adventures in form -- his FX series "Louie," now on hiatus between its third and fourth seasons, grafts art film, standup and situation comedy -- and his experiments in business. He earned more than $1 million by selling unrestricted-use downloads of his 2011 "Live at the Beacon Theater" straight to fans at $5 a pop; similarly he sold tickets to the tour during which "Oh My God" was taped/filmed/recorded directly through his website, cutting out ticket agency fees and keeping prices low. (One hundred thousand tickets were sold, at $45 per, in 45 hours.) Also in the spirit of giving value for money, it's his habit to burn all his material after a year, so the jokes in this concert, from the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, are All Fresh.

  9. McManus: Let's talk GOP and fantasy politics

Almost four years ago, long before the 2012 presidential campaign heated up, CNN took a poll to learn who Republicans might choose as their party's next nominee. There were two clear front-runners: former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. The former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, limped in third.

Does it matter that President Obama was right? That Kamala Harris is “the best-looking attorney general in the country”? Not really. As a quip, it failed; as an attempt at gallantry, it didn’t need saying. The president cushioned his...

  15. Why is GOP self-destructive?

Why do Republicans keep attacking their members? They bicker and denounce each other. That's not how you win elections. Case in point is the ill-fated 2008 ticket of Sen. John McCain and Gov. Sarah Palin. Ms. Palin and her family were ruthlessly attacked &mdash; by her own party &mdash; which contributed to Senator McCain losing his bid for the presidency. The latest example is Dr. Benjamin Carson who has expressed no desire to position himself for public office and is instead voicing strong, sensible solutions to some of the problems in this country.
