  1. NRA convention gets underway; Sarah Palin and Ted Nugent on tap

    HOUSTON -- The National Rifle Assn.&rsquo;s annual convention begins in earnest Friday in Houston, with leaders who have spent the year defending the group in the wake of mass shootings emboldened by the <a href="http://articles.latimes.com/2013/apr/17/nation/la-na-guns-senate-20130418" target="_blank">recent defeat of federal gun control legislation </a>and ready to rally around this year&rsquo;s theme: &ldquo;Stand and Fight.&rdquo;

  3. Sarah Palin for Senate? Some tea party activists want her to run

    SEATTLE — Sarah Palin’s last elective position in Alaska ended early when in 2009 she abandoned the governorship midway through her first term. But tea party activists appear eager for a comeback, urging supporters to contribute money toward...

  5. Sarah Palin is right about Washington's press

    We call it the "nerd prom," hoping that a dose of irony will inoculate us. But there's no use denying it: The White House Correspondents' Association's annual dinner is a deeply narcissistic event.

  7. TV picks: Louis C.K., 'Veep,' Wonder Woman, woolly mammoths

    <strong>"Louis C.K.: Oh My God" (premieres Saturday, HBO)</strong>. Funny, deep and unsparing of himself, Louis C.K. is arguably the most important comic going, both for his adventures in form -- his FX series "Louie," now on hiatus between its third and fourth seasons, grafts art film, standup and situation comedy -- and his experiments in business. He earned more than $1 million by selling unrestricted-use downloads of his 2011 "Live at the Beacon Theater" straight to fans at $5 a pop; similarly he sold tickets to the tour during which "Oh My God" was taped/filmed/recorded directly through his website, cutting out ticket agency fees and keeping prices low. (One hundred thousand tickets were sold, at $45 per, in 45 hours.) Also in the spirit of giving value for money, it's his habit to burn all his material after a year, so the jokes in this concert, from the Celebrity Theatre in Phoenix, are All Fresh.

  9. Not all states and capitals are obvious

    My daughter was studying for a test on states and their capitals, so I was trying to help her. As we drove along, I would say a state name, expecting her to say the capital. She remembered many of the capitals because she had learned them in previous...

  13. Will Obama's brain initiative unlock the mysteries of the Republican mind?

    President Barack Obama wants to invest an initial $110 billion in a study of the human brain that could have benefits as great as those achieved by the Human Genome Project. Maybe the first study should be done on the one-track minds of tea party Republicans who will undoubtedly oppose funding for the study because their brains are fixated on the single idea that government can do nothing right.

  19. 'Saturday Night Live' on Yahoo!: Where to start?

    Beginning in September, Yahoo! will become the exclusive online home of "Saturday Night Live's" massive 38-year archive of shows. That's roughly 742 episodes, not including the promised additions of behind-the-scenes clips, rehearsal video and selected live musical performances.

  23. McManus: Let's talk GOP and fantasy politics

    Almost four years ago, long before the 2012 presidential campaign heated up, CNN took a poll to learn who Republicans might choose as their party's next nominee. There were two clear front-runners: former Alaska Gov. Sarah Palin and former Arkansas Gov. Mike Huckabee. The former governor of Massachusetts, Mitt Romney, limped in third.
