  1. House approves short-term suspension of debt ceiling

WASHINGTON – House Republicans approved a temporary suspension of the $16.4-trillion ceiling on the nation’s debt Wednesday, allowing the federal government to continue borrowing through spring while Washington shifts to more ambitious...

  3. Robert B. Reich: Obama's debt-ceiling strategy could put the squeeze on GOP

    American Voices
A week before his inauguration, President Obama said he wouldn't negotiate with Republicans over raising the federal debt limit. At an unexpected news conference Jan. 14, the president asserted that he won't trade cuts in government spending in...

  7. Don't count Biden out in 2016

As the second Obama term gets underway, much is being said and written about the president finally emerging as a tougher, stronger Democrat in the liberal mold of past party greats. His second inaugural address pressed Republicans in Congress to accept a broader, more aggressive package of social programs and reforms than he embraced in his first term.

  9. GOP to showcase Rubio as new face of party

In the Republican Party's developing effort to put on a new face after November's presidential defeat, the latest gesture is trotting out freshman Sen. Marco Rubio of Florida to deliver the GOP response to President Barack Obama's State of the Union address before Congress next week.

  11. Filibuster reform, sort of

Senate leaders reached a compromise this week on limiting the filibuster, an obstructive procedural tactic that has become almost as routine on Capitol Hill as photo opportunities and news conferences. The Times' editorial board has long argued that the right approach would be to end the rule, not mend it. The best that can be said for this week's deal is that incremental progress toward a more functional Senate is better than no progress at all.

  13. Missed chance to fix the filibuster

The best chance to get the U.S. Senate to do its job is not to withhold pay (although withholding campaign contributions might have done the trick) but to reform the Senate rules so that filibusters aren't used so routinely to gum up the works. Majority Leader Harry Reid promised to take action, but the reforms revealed Thursday fall short of the strong medicine the chamber, and the nation, so desperately need.

  15. Ending filibuster abuse

The announcement last week that South Carolina's Jim DeMint is leaving his Senate seat to run the Heritage Foundation caused some in Washington to wishfully think that perhaps the move might usher in a more congenial, if not cooperative, outlook in the U.S. Senate. But while Mr. DeMint set the gold standard for ideological purity (denouncing his own party's candidates from time to time when they failed to measure up to his tea party, ultraconservative viewpoint), there are still plenty in the GOP with the flexibility of a ramrod.

  23. Noelle Nikpour: Karl Rove is a loser in many ways

There have been times in years past when I have thought – and even said out loud – that I might someday want to run for office. You know, just toying with the idea. Maybe I never will.  If Karl Rove were a Democrat, I guess he might want to...
