1. The sirens of the Pentagon

WASHINGTON -- It must be true what they say about women -- that they are smarter, stronger, wiser and wilier than your average Joe.
WASHINGTON -- It must be true what they say about women -- that they are smarter, stronger, wiser and wilier than your average Joe. How else could one explain the magical thinking that apparently has prompted Defense Secretary Leon Panetta and Gen....

3. Women in combat a bad idea

Unfortunately, a lot of military decisions are being made by people who have never served in combat or have had limited service ("Military ceiling lifted," Jan. 25). President Barack Obama never served in the military, and Defense Secretary Leon Panetta served a brief two years in military intelligence.

When Maryland National Guard Capt. Cara Kupcho first enlisted in the military 18 years ago, she wanted to drive a Bradley Fighting Vehicle, a 30-ton, armor-busting tank. "I like things that go boom," she explained Thursday. "I like tanks." But as a...

9. Women in combat: Good move?

Defense Secretary Leon Panetta announced hat the Pentagon would lift its ban on women serving in front-line combat roles. The new policy, backed by President Obama, could open 230,000 positions to women and give them more opportunities to advance their military careers. The Defense Department will set gender-neutral performance standards for those positions in a process will take several years to carry out. Critics say women aren’t as capable as men in combat roles, and will undermine military cohesion. Supporters of the policy shift say there’s no good reason to deny women who want to serve in combat the opportunity if they can meet the same standards as men. Will this policy change make the U.S. military stronger? Or is it the latest example of political correctness? Do you trust the Pentagon to uphold the standards for combat duty? Talk about it!

11. Women in the Army Can Now See Combat

Yesterday, America took a giant stride toward gender equality by allowing military women to serve in combat. The order was signed yesterday by Defense Secretary Leon Panetta, and could provide over 230,000 jobs to women. This does not mean that the military will relax its strict physical requirements. From USA Today:

15. Band of brothers and sisters

Secretary of Defense Leon E. Panetta's decision to rescind restrictions on women in combat is being compared to President Harry Truman's order to end racial segregation in the armed services (which took years to implement) and Congress' vote in 2010 to end the "don't ask, don't tell" policy that allowed for the expulsion of openly gay service members. But in some ways Panetta's decision is even more significant than those earlier actions.
