Story | Aug 3, 2014The pressure on President Richard Nixon in the spring and summer of 1974 was unrelenting. One by one, his aides dropped by the wayside, charged or convicted or pleading guilty in the widening Watergate investigation, an incident so influential in the nation's history that no political scandal or even cultural kerfuffle can escape the "gate" suffix, even four decades later. The initial Watergate transcripts were released that May — and published first in the Chicago Tribune. The newspaper called on Nixon to step down. In June, former Nixon aide Charles Colson said the president "urged him" to do what he did. In July, more Watergate transcripts showed Nixon telling his aides to "stonewall." A few weeks later, the U.S. Supreme Court ruled he had to surrender more White House tapes. Three days later, on July 27, the House Judiciary Committee voted to impeach him. On Aug. 5, Nixon's crucial House support crumbled as new transcripts supported "charges of obstruction of justice against him." The resignation was just a matter of time.
