Born in 1925 and educated at mission schools, Lumumba deepened his mastery of French on his own and was proud of his facility with the language. Handsome, ambitious, brilliant, charismatic — and a great womanizer — he resembled his slightly older contemporary, John Kennedy, despite the marked differences in their circumstances.
