New-Look Signs Would Drop Word 'Handicapped' And Put Wheelchair In Motion

Drivers parking in spots reserved for people with disabilities are greeted with a sign showing someone sitting in a wheelchair. That wheelchair may stay, but advocates of a change say the existing signs send the wrong message about people with disabilities and they are lobbying for something different.

"The existing symbol looks like someone who is stationary and helpless and focuses on the wheelchair," said Stephen Morris, executive director of Favarh - The ARC of the Farmington Valley. Favarh provides services to people with developmental and intellectual disabilities.
