NEWINGTON -- Two years ago, Democratic state Rep. Sandy Nafis romped to an eighth term, beating her GOP opponent 63 percent to 37 percent.
So when Nafis decided to retire this year, Republican candidate Gary Byron appeared to face a tough road to victory in the 27th House District. Not only would he have to convince many of Nafis' supporters to back him, he also would have to overcome a huge Democratic advantage in voter registration.
On Tuesday, Byron hurdled those barriers with relative ease, decisively defeating Democratic Town Committee Chairwoman Carol Anest. Bryon's victory surprised even fellow Republicans.
