For Rauner and GOP, magic number in Illinois House is 1

There are 118 Illinois House seats on the ballot Tuesday, but for Republicans, the magic number is one.

The GOP knows it's highly unlikely it will catch a tidal wave and sweep Speaker Michael Madigan out of power. But all the House Republicans need to do is end up with one more seat and the long-serving Southwest Side Democrat will no longer hold a supermajority of 71 members.

That would be a big help to Republican Bruce Rauner should he emerge victorious from a close governor's race, allowing him to avoid facing a legislature where Democrats possess the ability to overturn any of his vetoes if they simply stick together.
