Lawmakers Honor Late Rep. Mary Fritz on House Floor

State legislators on Wednesday honored the late Rep. Mary Fritz, one of the longest-serving lawmakers who gained a reputation for speaking her mind and voting independently as a conservative Democrat.

Fritz died in July at the age of 78 after serving for 32 years in the General Assembly.

A member of the education committee for 12 years, she was a former teacher and school board chairman in her hometown of Wallingford. She eventually won 16 elections to the legislature and became a deputy House Speaker.

This spring, a school in Wallingford will be renamed after Fritz to honor her support of education, said Rep. Mary Mushinsky, a Democratic colleague from Wallingford....
