Orlando considers drone rules as enthusiasts, lobbyist object

If local department store shelves are any indication, many Orlando residents can expect to unwrap a remote-controlled drone on Christmas morning this year.

But while drones have become a popular gift and a growing hobby, their use currently is prohibited on public property in the city of Orlando, without first getting approval through a process designed with helicopters in mind.

The City Council plans to vote Jan. 9 on new rules that would govern drone use in Orlando, prohibiting use of drones near certain landmarks and large gatherings but also creating a specialized permit officials say would be easier to obtain.
