One of the longest-lasting, enduring friendships in the U.S. Senate was the close bond between Democrat Joe Lieberman and Republican John McCain.
The two lawmakers traveled overseas numerous times with Republican Sen. Lindsey Graham as part of the "three amigos" who developed strong friendships across party lines.
While Lieberman has retired from the Senate after not seeking reelection in 2012, he is now reaching out to his colleague, who was diagnosed this week with brain cancer.
