Fireworks Bill Fizzles Out For the Year After Police Opposition

Faced with mounting opposition from police and fire chiefs, a controversial bill to expand fireworks sales in Connecticut failed Wednesday.

The legislature’s judiciary committee declined to vote on the unpopular bill, essentially defeating the measure for the rest of the session, lawmakers said.

The bill would have placed Connecticut on par with 29 other states that permit the sale of any items at the federal level that are known as “consumer fireworks.’’ Connecticut would have been selling the same items as in New Hampshire, which is known as the place to go in New England for more advanced fireworks.
