Dent backs voting rights bill, defends photo ID laws

U.S. Rep. Charlie Dent said Sunday that voter identification laws should be allowed under a renewed effort to update the federal Voting Rights Act. Dent is one of six Republicans co-sponsoring a bill from Wisconsin Republican Rep. Jim Sensenbrenner and Michigan Democratic Rep. John Conyers, which aims to revise federal law in response to a 2013 U.S. Supreme Court ruling. Justices threw out a provision that required nine states with a history of discrimination to get federal clearance for any updates to their election laws.  The Supreme Court called on Congress to modernize the formula for determining which states must seek outside approval to change their voting laws.
