Distraught Homeowners Turn To The Law, Each Other, For Help With Failing Foundations

Distraught Homeowners Turn To The Law, Each Other, For Help With Failing Foundations

WILLINGTON — The day after Thanksgiving 2012, Nancy Smith was unpacking Christmas decorations while a home inspector checked out some small lines and cracking in her basement walls.

The fissures were disturbing, and she wasn't the only homeowner finding them — though she didn't know that then. She certainly wasn't prepared for what happened next.

"The home inspector came upstairs and told me my house was in a state of collapse," Smith said.

"And after that, everything was on hold."

Smith, 70, of Willington, was told that she and her husband, Clyde, would have to replace the foundation if they wanted to keep their home.
