BRISTOL — With Republican incumbent Jason Welch leaving office next month, the 31st Senate District race is one of very few in central Connecticut where it's an open field.
Bristol council member Henri Martin is trying to keep the district part of GOP territory. Rob Michalik Jr. wants to get the seat back for Democrats, who held it for many years before Welch ousted Tom Colapietro in 2010.
Both men say they could work effectively in a politically divided legislature and, if necessary, with a governor from the opposition party.
