Bill Aims to End 11th Hour Land Sales

A proposed amendment to the state constitution that would make it much harder to sell, trade or give away land in state parks, forests or other protected areas cleared the Senate but was awaiting action in the house late Wednesday.

The measure, which has bipartisan backing, would end the controversial end-of-session ritual of burying the sale or trade of state-owned land within a package of routine, noncontroversial land transfers.

It passed the Senate on a vote of 31 to 5, which meets the required three-quarters threshold. If approved by three-fours of the House of Representatives, the question would go before voters in November.
