President Donald Trump's nominee for a new federal post focusing on mental health has strong Connecticut ties.

Dr. Elinore McCance-Katz, chief medical officer for the Rhode Island Department of Behavioral Healthcare, Developmental Disabilities, and Hospitals, is an Eastern Connecticut State University graduate with a Ph.D. from Yale and who went to UConn Medical School.

After graduating from UConn, McCance-Katz did her residency in psychiatry at Hartford Hospital's Institute of Living. Her career in academia included a seven-year stint as a professor of psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine.
