GOP Effort To Force Vote On Union Contracts Creates First Dispute At Young Legislative Session

Calls for bipartisanship and a renewed spirit of cooperation in the state House and Senate came early and often at the Capitol Wednesday during the opening of the 2017 legislative session, but an unexpected vote that split party lines could be a sign of things to come in the closely divided legislature.

Republicans sought to change the House rules to require a vote on union contracts with a one-sentence amendment. With Democrats controlling both chambers for years, union contracts have gone into effect without a vote and at a time when the state is facing large projected budget deficits, Republicans argue the contracts should go to a vote.
