Vikings stride with pride (May 16, 2013)
Some of Ristow's assistants were staff members and parents Hayley Cheshire, Michelle Spies, Melissa DeWyre, Erin Dohm, Cindy Pyjar, Shelly Wochoski, Becky Ryan, Amy and April Schwartzfisher and Brad and Karen George. The workouts were from 3-4 p.m. Mondays and Thursdays, April 22-May 16. When weather permitted, participants went outside to the track to exercise. If there was bad weather, they used the multi-purpose room in the Alanson Elementary School for their activities. Snacks and water were provided thanks to the 21st Century Program. The program was free to all the participants who worked out but to participate in the one or two mile race it cost $1. The final workout and race is a one or two mile run or walk at 9 a.m. on Saturday, May 18, beginning at the track and ball fields. All of the registered race participants will receive a Viking Stride with Pride T-shirt.
First place finishers in each age or gender group will receive a medal. All other participants received a participation award. Sponsors for this program were Citizens National Bank, Petoskey-Harbor Springs Area Community Foundation, Little Traverse Primary Care, Louie's Fresh Market and Carter's Imagewear.
Ristow said she started this program because there are kids at Alanson schools who are good runners but didn't have an opportunity to experience competition. The program encourages healthy habits and gets the young people in shape. Second-grader Brendyn Grawey who is running the two mile race on Saturday, May 18, commented, "I like running with the middle schoolers and Mrs. Cheshire. It makes me a stronger runner." Another enthusiastic participant, second-grader Jayna Gahn, who is running the one mile race on Saturday reflected "It's fun and good exercise. I'm excited about the one mile race!"
Dale Clark is a senior at Alanson High School. He is the son of William and Frances Clark of Brutus.
