Margaret E. Maynard, 92, of Port Charlotte, Fla., passed away on Nov. 23, 2012, at Bay Bluffs medical care facility in Harbor Springs.
Margaret was born on Oct. 8, 1920, to William Riley and Lula (Thorn) Scofield in Martiny Township, Mecosta County, Mich. She was a graduate of Mecosta Rural Agricultural High School, class of 1938.
Margaret and Philip purchased property on Pickerel Lake, and together worked hard in their free time to build their dream cottage; a place that became like a second home. Some of her fondest memories revolved around the many happy days that she and Philip, their children and grandchildren spent enjoying the beauty of the lake.
Together Margaret and Philip retired to the Gulf Coast of Florida settling in Port Charlotte, where they would spend winters; returning each summer to the cottage in Northern Michigan.
On June 3, 1989, Philip preceded Margaret in death. For the last four years, she has lived with her son, Philip B. Maynard; wintering in Martinez, Ga. Together they enjoyed watching college sports, Detroit Tigers Baseball and spending summers at the cottage.
Margaret's family will fondly remember a mother and grandmother who was proud and independent; a woman who throughout her life and regardless of the difficulties placed in her path remained happy and positive; a woman with a romantic streak who enjoyed novels by Nora Roberts; and a woman who enjoyed rebuilding furniture, sewing, painting and pottery; but above all else a woman who loved her family with all her heart and soul.
Margaret is survived by her son, Philip, of Martinez, Ga.; and by her daughter, Garland Elaine (Chris) Moore, of Concord, Calif. She is also survived by her four grandchildren and three great-grandchildren.
Her life will be celebrated this coming spring with a memorial service; that service will be announced at a later date. She will be interred within Martiny Township Cemetery in Mecosta County.
