Herbert Hugh Edwards, of Harbor Springs and Borrego Springs, Calif., passed away May 12, 2012, at the age of 80.
He is survived by his wife of 54 years, Lorraine Edwards; daughter, Pamela (Tim) Tyler, of Grand Rapids; son, Mark (Rachael) Edwards, of Fairplay, Colo.; son, Paul (Joie) Edwards, of Colorado Springs, Colo.; grandchildren, Kami (Randy) Wilks, Steven Tyler, Allison Tyler, Jessica Edwards, Callie Edwards and Jordan Edwards; great-grandchildren, Gavin Wilks and Kaylin Wilks; and sister, Sue Longnecker.
U.S. Navy Reserve, was commissioned at age 22, served active duty for two years as operations officer of the USS Zeal (AM-131), and resigned his commission in 1967. His formal education included a B.S. degree in chemistry and a juris doctorate, both from the University of Denver.
Upon graduation, he, his wife and daughter moved to Midland, Mich., where his two sons were later born. He practiced law for more than 30 years, both as a private attorney and assistant general counsel for the Dow Chemical Co. in Midland, and finally of counsel to Ramer and Moore in Harbor Springs.
He was active in the Michigan Bar, served as president of the Midland Bar Association, and for nearly 35 years acted as chairman of the Hearing Panel (Northern Michigan) for the Attorney Discipline Board. Over the years, he acted as councilman for the city of Midland, and as member of countless boards and commissions, including county commissioner and road commissioner of Emmet County.
A memorial gathering of friends and family will take place at 4 p.m. on Wednesday, Aug. 8, in Herb's meadow at 6710 S. Lake Shore Drive, Harbor Springs.
