Helen Ross, 101, of Petoskey, died on Oct. 18, 2011, at her home at Independence Village in Petoskey.
Helen was born on Dec. 3, 1909, in the Ukraine and at the age of 2 immigrated to Windsor, Ontario, Canada, with her mother.
Helen's life was greatly influenced by the Great Depression and she lived her life from the lessons she took from it. Helen was an excellent cook and took time to pass on some of the old family recipes from the Ukraine to her children, grandchildren and great-grandchildren, which are always enjoyed especially around the holidays. She was a very good mother and grandmother and always took time to spend with her family, and when she was able, always held family gatherings.
Helen is survived by her daughter, Lillian Torsky, of Petoskey; two grandchildren, Karen Torsky of Lansing and Greg Torsky of Carp Lake; three great-grandchildren, Nick (Kristy) Torsky of Gaylord, Kasey Torsky of Grand Rapids, and Ross Torsky of Grand Rapids; two great-great-grandchildren, Nicholas and Anna Torsky; and by nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her husband, George; and by a stepsister, Nellie Karroll.
A service celebrating Helen's life will take place at 2 p.m. on Friday, Oct. 21, at the Stone Funeral Home in Petoskey with the Rev. David Behling officiating. The family will receive friends from noon until the time of service on Friday at the funeral home. Burial will take place in the White Chapel Memorial Cemetery in Troy.
