Friends came for supper one evening and their four young sons came dressed in superman capes. No, not kidding.
Having seen the youngsters in action before, I had removed the breakables from the living room before they arrived. Somewhere in the middle of it all I relaxed. Maybe it was that night that I began to understand the way the world works: Glasses break, juice is spilled and furniture gets scratches and dings. At least it does if there is genuine life around us.
We need to know that people will disappoint us from time to time. And there will be mornings our car won’t start and sometimes it will be just two days before Thanksgiving and our new gas range has still not been delivered! Once we make peace with this, the rest is a piece of cake. Chocolate cake, that is, which smears the fabric of our couches and causes us to change our favorite shirt just before we leave for church! Maybe that last one is just me.
