Prince George's County Public Schools is one of six urban school districts that has been selected by the Wallace Foundation to participate in a new $75-million "principal pipeline" initiative. This national initiative aims to help school districts develop a much larger corps of effective school principals and to determine whether this improves student achievement across the district, especially in the highest needs schools.
Over the next five years of the initiative, PGCPS estimates it will be able to potentially hire 125 principals and assistant principals over the five years of the grant and will have a strong pipeline in place to hire even more principals in the future.
Reservoir High School PTSA and HC DrugFree will co-sponsor a panel of teens on Monday, Oct. 24, 7-8 p.m., to describe their experiences with substance abuse and how they overcame those challenges and started making healthier choices. A panel discussion will follow, including a drug and alcohol abuse counselor who can answer your questions and concerns about what parents should look for and what they can do. The program is for ages 13 and older with an adult.
Eleanor Roosevelt and Laurel high school students have been named semifinalists in the 2012 National Achievement Scholarship program. The students will compete for one of 800 National Achievement Scholarship awards worth more than $2.4 million to be awarded next spring.
The semifinalists from Eleanor Roosevelt High are Sebastien Anderson, Taryn Harris, Caitlan Moore, Maurice Shelton, Matthew Shirley, Randi Williams and Amber Youhouse-Clark.
Daniel Townsend is the semifinalist from Laurel High School.
Cyber Battle Lab students at Capitol College have qualified for the Maryland Cyber Challenge and Conference to be held Oct. 22 at theBaltimore Convention Center.
The students participating are Alex Eakle, Austin Merson, Eddy Hintze, Jeremy Hedges, Marc Fruchtbaum and Tuan Pho.
The competition will test the critical thinking skills of the students and put their cybersecurity skills to the ultimate test. The students will rely on the information and skills they have gained in the CBL, through Capitol's information assurance curriculum and through their own individual research.
