Below is a brief description of development projects spear-headed by Howard Hughes Corp. in downtown Columbia.

Whole FoodsWhole Foods Market will open in the Howard Hughes-owned Rouse Co. building located on the lakefront. In addition, the developer signed a lease with the Columbia Association to put a wellness retreat on the bottom floor. The building will open in late summer or early fall.

Metropolitan Downtown Columbia – A $100 million mixed-use development with 380 apartment units and 14,000 square feet of retail located in the Warfield neighborhood by the Columbia mall. Under construction and scheduled to open in late summer.

Multi-use pathway – As required by the Downtown Columbia Plan, Howard Hughes is to construct a multi-use pathway that connects Blandair Park and Howard County General Hospital. Phase one and two of the pathway to be completed in spring. Phase three and four to begin construction in summer.

Warfield development – A $125 million two-structure mixed-use development with 437 apartments and 30,000 square feet of retail located in the Warfield neighborhood adjacent to the Columbia mall. In county approval process. Construction could start early 2015 and be complete in 2017.

Crescent project – A 5 million square-foot mega-development is planned for the Crescent, located between Little Patuxent Parkway and Route 29. The estimated $1 billion development would include a mix of retail, office, residential and civic uses. The first phase is expected to begin construction in spring 2015.
