Gators running back Mike Gillislee entered last season a career back-up, but ended it as an NFL prospect.

Gillislee's lateral quickness and determined running style landed with the Miami Dolphins, who used the 164th pick (5th round) of the draft on the Deland native.

He joins Chris Rainey - the No. 159 pick last year by the Steelers - as the only Gators running back drafted in the past six seasons.

Gillislee with join a Dolphins team that decided not to re-sign veteran Reggie Bush in the offseason. Third-year running back Daniel Thomas, a second-round pick out of Kansas State, second-year back Lamar Miller, a fourth-round pick out of Miami.

Gillislee was the 14th running back selected, but has less mileage than any of them. A back-up for three seasons, Gillislee had just 389 carries at Florida, including 244 in 2012.

"The one thing I love about Mike Gillislee is his odometer is low," NFL Network analyst Charles Davis said following the pick. "Just one year as the featured runner."

An afterthough at Florida for three seasons, Gillislee is now headed to the team he followed growing up.

"The Dolphins were always my favorite team," he said on the team's Web site. "It was always a dream, and now my dream came true"

Here's some quick information on Gillislee entering the draft:

Ht:  5-11 1/8. Wt: 208

40 time: 4.5. Key stat: Had 1,152 rushing yards, team-high 11 total TDs in 2012.

Buzz: At 5-foot-11, 208 pounds and with 4.5-second speed in the 40-yard dash, Gillislee could add five or 10 pounds and will not run by many NFL defenders. But it hard to argue with his production during his only season as a starter at Florida. Gillislee was the school’s first 1,000 yards rusher since Ciatrick Fason in 2004. (Fason was a fourth-round pick by the Minnesota Vikings.) On the rare occasions Florida threw to him, Gillislee was effective, highlighted by a game-winning 45-yard touchdown catch against Missouri. He also is a willing blocker and played special teams his first three seasons at Florida.

Pre-draft quote: “You can find all the (negative) things you want about him. But when you find a back with the lateral quickness that he has, with the determination that he has, the competitiveness with which he runs … I just like him.” Todd McShay, ESPN
