Authorities investigate mom's claim that girl was hit by car

Authorities are investigating the death of a 3-year-old girl whose mother claimed she was struck by a vehicle.

Florida Highway Patrol spokeswoman Sgt. Kim Montes said the agency was looking into the account of Maryanne Schwartz, who called 911 Friday evening, saying that her daughter, Yeliani Schwartz-Ojeda, had been hit by a car.

Investigators noted inconsistencies in the 22-year-old Schwartz's story, Montes said.

Schwartz told investigators that she didn't see her daughter get hit. She called 911 at about 9:30 p.m. Friday while driving from her Orange County apartment complex to a hospital, and was told to pull over and wait for authorities to arrive.

The girl died of her injuries at Arnold Palmer Hospital for Children.

Meanwhile, the Department of Children and Families has taken Yeliani's 2-year-old brother into custody.

"We have an open investigation regarding the family," said DCF spokeswoman Kristi Gray. "We got involved regarding concerns about the surviving sibling."
